Seeking death place and California info about Samuel Ashton CURLESS, b.
May 12, 1827 in Clermont/Brown Cty Ohio, died January 1850 in California.
Last residence before coming was Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Have promissory note
that he signed on October 29, 1849 promising to pay $100 "baring
interest" to Issac Demais [?], a Newton and a Harryman. No idea where
the note was signed. We know about his brothers: Dr. William CURLESS, who
lived in various places but ended up in Truckee; Biar, George Washington
and Wright Soper Curless Jr. who operated hydraulic mine on Weber Creek
before migrating and homesteading in Humboldt Cty, CA. Don't know if SAC
was a soldier or not. Though born in Ohio, he lived in Indiana from 1833
to late 40s, then to Cedar Rapids for a scant few years, possibly less
than two. May have been associated with surnames BROWN, SHAW, GILBERT,
ASHTON, family from Ohio and Iowa, as well as promissory note names.
