Subject: GOLDRUSH MOST WANTED - David WHARFF
David WHARFF, born 31/12/1828, Gloucester MA, died 16/9/1918, San Francisco
(buried in Cyprus Hill, Petaluma CA). Started to California from Boston
16/2/1849 on "Cristina", arrived San Francisco 16/8/1849 after traversing South
America (David kept a log/diary and we have contents of the voyage and
subsequent activity). Left within 2 hours for Sacramento and Sierra Nevada's to
rush gold. Mined large nugget in Middlecreek, July 4 1850, which may still be in
the WHARFF family. David returned to Boston 1852, married Olive DENSMORE (b.
Maitland Nova Scotia 25/11/1827). David/Olive had 6 children, Mary Lissie (b.
31/3/1853, d. 7/11/1864) , Lucy Denning, (b. 11/12/1854 d. 16/4/1940), Nathaniel
Prentice Banks, (b. 12/5/1857, d. 10/12/1920, Los Ojitos ranch CA), Belinda
Copeland, (b. 7/6/1859, d. ?/?/1944), Carrie L. (b. 25/4/1863, d. 7/2/1878),
Hattie H. (b. 4/12/1868, d. 20/6/1875), and Eppie A (b. 31/10/1870, d.
13/2/1878). We trace David WHARFF (and sister Mary Jane WHARFF) to Nathaniel
WHARFF and Rebecca MACKWORTH WHARFF to 1644, when they came from Yorkshire,
England to Gloucester, MA. David is my Great-Great-Great Grandfather. The
children of David/Olive WHARFF are originators of what we believe to be the
existing WHARFF line in California. Attempting to fill out details and would
appreciate any information regarding mining by David WHARFF in/around
Middlecreek on/around 1849-52. Photo of David circa 1852 in mining garb. Anyone
with additional information please respond.
