Subject: GOLDRUSH MOST WANTED - DOANE

Ezekiel DOANE was b:1813 in Eastham, Mass. d:1890 Eastham, Mass. He joined the "El Dorado Association" in Boston and sailed from there on April 2, 1849, on the brig Canonicus. It arrived in San Francisco, November 2, 1849. Ezekiel was a shipmaster in his own right but did not pilot this ship. The master was John S. MARTIN of Castine, Me. ; Christopher GODFREY of Providence, R.I., mate; Andrew WESCANTHAL of Boston, second mate, Mr. JUDKINS of Roxbury, Ma., third mate. The President of the company was Lemuel LYONS of Roxbury; W.C. PERKINS of Roxbury vice-president; Nathaniel HOWARD of Boston, A.W. CARLETON of Methuen, and Francis D. CROFT, directors. Also on board was T.D. CLARK. I am not sure where he was from but he became a friend to Ezekiel DOANE and they mined together near Stockton. Ezekiel returned home to Eastham about 2 years later across the Panama Isthmus. It is said that he traveled in an owen cart. I do not know how he got from Panama back to Mass. Marilyn McGuire
