George DOWNHOUR b. 1809 PA; mar. 4 Sep 1832, Perry Co OH to Sarah SHUNK.
He farmed in Monday Creek twp, Perry Co OH, and again in Blackford Co IN.
About 1851, he went to Calif. with a group, to the "Gold Rush,"
taking along his eldest son, John Jacob DOWNHOUR, who at time was 19 years
old. George died 2 Mar 1853, of pneumonia, aged 44 years, reportedly
buried in an unmarked grave at Auburn, Placer Co CA. His son John Jacob,
sending the circumstances of his death in a letter to his mother in
Indiana. After George's death, John Jacob and two CLAPPER brothers opened
a sawmill in Weaverville, Trinity Co CA. This mill was flooded out in the
winter of 1861-62. He went on to Helena, Montana, in which area he
remained the rest of his life.
