Subject: GOLDRUSH MOST WANTED - Henry PRIOR
I am looking for information leading me to my ggg-grandfather HENRY PRIOR (BORN
IN ENGLAND). He was a passenger on the brig Osceola which left Philadelphia, PA
in Jan 1848 and sailed around the Cape. He was among 80 passengers on that boat
(Samuel Upham wrote about the trip in a book). It sailed to San Francisco and
arrived in the Spring of 1848. I have heard storied that he was "killed by
Indians in California" and that he supposedly owned or acquired land in Merced
and/or Mariposa Counties. I've read books dealing with the Mariposa Battalion
and can't find any reference to HENRY PRIOR. There were lots of Indian battles
fought in those areas around the Merced River, etc. I was wondering if anyone
has heard of my HENRY or knows how I can find him.
