Subject: GOLDRUSH MOST WANTED - HILL
John Christopher HILL b 2 Apr 1817 Richmond VA; d before Sep 1853 possibly
Placer, El Dorado, Nevada, or any surrounding area of these locations. JC HILL
was md to Casandra Melinda FLOYD 21 Aug 1842 Clark Co MO. They had 2 children
there. John is said to have come to California with one or more of his brothers
from Clark Co MO in 1850, and assumed without his family. In Sep 1853, Clark Co
MO Orphans Court, guardianship papers were filled for the 2 HILL children,
naming 2 of JC HILL's brothers as guardian of his estate. By 1854 the widow has
come to Nevada Co with a new husband, William Harrison ORR. They have at least 4
children, the first being born about 1854 in MO. A business is listed on the
1856 Nevada Co CA Directory belonging to WH ORR, as the Lone Star Saloon on
Commercial St, and a house on Nevada St. The next significant event is
Guardianship papers being filed in Placer Co CA 1857 by William Harrison ORR
(the step father), and he is granted guardianship of the 2 minor HILL children.
The ORRs are found on 1860 Placer Co census and are running a boarding house,
although WH ORR's occupation is listed as farmer. Casandra Melinda
FLOYD-HILL-ORR-PORTER is well accounted for, and dies in Pilot Hill CA 1914. I
have had little success in finding out what happened to her first husband, John
Christopher HILL (my ancestor), or her next husband, William Harrison ORR. Any
light anyone can shed on this family would be greatly appreciated.
