Subject:[CA-GOLDRUSH-L] Most Wanted: John Cochran HOLLEY
I am interested in any information regarding my ancestor John Cochran HOLLEY(b.
AL) who came across the plains to CA in 1852(according to his obit). The first
record I have of him is in the 1854-1856 tax records in Mariposa Co, CA. He was
a stock raiser (sheep) but he probably also tried his hand at mining. He is
listed in Mariposa Co in the 1860 census. He seems to have moved to Merced Co as
in 1862(?) his house was reported in the paper as being burned down. I have been
having a heck of a time tracing him before 1854 and cannot find his family (or
even likely allied families that might give a clue to his whereabouts in the
1850 census). So if people could keep an eye out for him, I would appreciate it
(especially in early Mariposa Co stuff). P.S. 9 times out of ten, when I find
record of him, his middle initial is given. Thanks, Mike White (
