John Davis GOLDEN, b 1852 IN, d aft 1896 AK? CA? son of John Wesley GOLDEN &
Mary Ann "Polly" REPLOGLE, prob South Bend, StJoseph Co IN; m ca 1876 MO (county
unknown) to Martha A. "Mattie" CRAIG, b Jan 1852 OH? IL? (parents unknown), she
d 20 Jan 1905 Dinuba, Tulare Co CA, bur across the Co border at Reedley, Fresno
Co CA. John was one of about 12 children; some remained in Warren Co IA and some
went to CA. John grew up in Warren Co IA, left there ca 1875, married in MO ca
1876, and went to KS. His family is shown on the census 18 Jun 1880 in Galena,
Lowell Twp, Cherokee Co KS, he was an engineer. The local newspaper 18 July 1880
said "J.D. Golden & Co., on the Galena Crusher Company's land, are sinking an
air shaft some 70 feet south of the one that is yielding." From 1882 to 1884 he
lived in Dinuba, Tulare Co CA where he was in business with this father as John
Golden & Son. He had a lumber mill in the high mountains which was sold in 1884.
25 Mar 1884 he registered to vote in Tulare Co CA and gave his occupation as
machinist. In 1885 there were court records in Tulare Co CA. On 3 Apr 1896 John
left Traver, Tulare Co CA for "Goldfields," Alaska with his brother Stephen
Augustus GOLDEN and their relative James Jacob LUSHBAUGH. James arrived 15 May
1896 at Turnigan Arm, Cook Inlet, AK. Stephen and James both returned to
California later, but we do not know the fate of John Davis GOLDEN. When John's
mother died in 1897 in CA, his residence was unknown. In 1905 space was reserved
in his wife's grave but he was not buried there. Family tradition said after
going to Alaska he was seen in "northern California." We are seeking John's
