Re: CA-GOLDRUSH MOST WANTED - LIS/LISE/LISS/LIES/LIEZ/LIZ/LIZE
Subject: [CA-GOLDRUSH] Most Wanted: John Liss Jean/John LIS-LISE-LISS-LIES-LIEZ-LIZ-LIZE- [maybe LISSO, LISSEAUX, or DELISS]. John was a Frenchman who probably came to California for the goldrush. The earliest record found for him is: 1852 Nov 20: John Lise/Lize: County Court of Tuolumne County, aged 31, Renounced the Republic of France, 20 Nov 1852, Book E, pg 81. 'Declarations of Intention For Naturalization Santa Clara County California' by Christine Rose, 1990. He is said to have had two brothers, one was a sailor named Felix. He only ever wrote "France" when asked for his place of birth. He is next found in this index: John LIES, September 25, 1868, Vol. F, pg 555, Index to Naturalization Records, Santa Clara Co Clerk's Records Office, San Jose. The Naturalization Record Volumes cannot be located by the Santa Clara Co Clerk; they appear to be lost. In 1869 John married Jeanette Chaffin in Santa Clara Co. I have information for the end of his life, but nothing between 1852 and 1868; or his beginnings in France. He may possibly have had a first marriage.
